Free Literacy Tutor Training, June 1st

The next free Literacy Tutor Training Workshop will be held on Saturday, June 1st, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please pre-register by Thursday, May 30th, with Literacy Coordinator Liz Barbee, (909) 931-4211. The Literacy Office is located on the lower level of the restored historical Carnegie Cultural Center, at 123 D Street, Upland, CA 91786, next door to the Upland Public Library.

12th Annual Literacy Trivia Bee & Silent Auction

Congratulations to Team Rutherford, the champion of the 12th Annual Literacy Trivia Bee and Silent Auction on March 28th! Francie’s Fanatics (Library staff), the Justice League (City Attorney’s team), The Tutor Titans, intrepid newbies from the Pacific Christian Center, You Bee History (UHS teachers), and last year’s champs, the Upland Highlanders all presented a valiant effort. Nevertheless, County Supervisor Janice Rutherford led her team members Lisa Jeffers and Gayla Sanchez (who always happens to be her mother) to victory. Trivia Judges Tom Thomas and Renuka Balakrishnan awarded points for correct answers, plus bonus or make-up points for flair, presentation, and/or Bee Bucks. Master of Ceremony Bob Cable presided over the mayhem (when Scorekeeper Ann Thomas allowed him), as the teams guesstimated, sketched, sang, and sometimes provided the correct answer for the most points. A light dinner and dessert was provided by Jersey Mike’s, Pine Haven Catering, Progressive Catering, Claro’s Italian Market, and the Brandt Family Winery.
