The Upland Police Department offers young people between the ages of 14 ½ and 20 years of age the opportunity to learn about and participate in police-related activities through Upland Explorer Post 606. Sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America, this volunteer auxiliary unit meets regularly at the Police Department and affords young people a birds-eye-view of what community-based policing is all about. The Post is open to all eligible applicants who meet and follow Department standards and guidelines.
Post 606 is a leadership-oriented, "student-run" program. While adult employees of the Department monitor the program, the Explorer members run the ICT training, participate in patrol ride-alongs, and volunteer their time to assist in local community activities. The Post conducts two recruitment cycles each year in the spring and fall. Applicants are required to pass a written exam, maintain a minimum "C" average in school, be of good moral character, and have written permission from a parent or guardian (if under 18 years) in order to participate in the program. A non-refundable fee (BSA) of $7.00 is required upon completion of the application process.
Once accepted into the program, all candidates will participate in an eight-week In-house Candidate Training (ICT) program where they will be familiarized with police practices and protocols, military drill, traffic control, physical training, report writing, radio codes, and patrol ride-alongs. At the completion of the ICT program, each candidate will have earned the privilege to wear the uniform and badge of a police explorer. Within one year of joining the Post, each new Explorer will be required to complete an approved Explorer academy program.
